Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the emotional, mental and physical well-being of our community by providing social, health, nutrition, volunteers, education, safety, services, and p rograms primarily designed for seniors.

The purpose of the Center is to staff and maintain a multi-purpose center and to develop, coordinate and carry out community-wide programs of social services, employment, health, recreation, and education primarily designed for seniors.

The Walla Walla Senior Center (WWSC) is a non-profit organization with an annual budget of over one million dollars and a staff of 30 employees. WWSC houses a variety of programs on-site as well as outlying areas. For over 37 years WWSC has provided nutrition to seniors through Meals-On-Wheels and congregate dining in surrounding counties of Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin.

The Adult Day Center, Voice Care (Personal Emergency Response program) which is complete with a GPS mobile safety system, the Barber/Beauty Salon, the AARP Senior Employment Program, and the Montessori Pre-School are all located onsite at the WWSC. From February to April, the AARP tax-aide program is hos ted at the WWSC to provide free income tax preparation and electronic filing services. Local attorneys also provide limited pro-bono legal advice to seniors by appointment once monthly.

Position Summary

The Executive Director is a full-time, salaried exempt employee, who serves as the chief administrator of operations at the WWSC with overall strategic and operational responsibility for the WWSC staff, programs, expansion and execution of its Mission. The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of the Trustees of the WWSC. The Executive Director hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates all staff and volunteers for the nonprofit corporation and oversees all finances, human resources, activities, fundraising and revenue development, property upkeep and security, program development with contract negotiating, and community relations. This is important for the consistent achievement of financial objectives revolving around its Mission. Assists the Boa rd in the development and implementation and maintenance of policies and procedures as well as the Employee Handbook.

The Executive Director is a “working Manager” position that may include requirements for standing, moving furniture, working flexible weekend or evening hours, in addition to the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time and operating computers or other office equipment requiring hand/eye coordination.

Essential Functions

The Executive Director should possess a combination of supervisory, managerial, administrative and direct service skills in a nonprofit setting. Extensive experience in grant writing, leadership, budgeting, marketing, customer service, human resources, and innovative fundraising is vital to the continued success of the WWSC. Be able to actively engage and energize volunteers, board members, event committees, and funders. Serve as ex-officio of each committee. Ensure ongoing programs maintain a consiste nt quality of administration and communication. Create, support, maintain, and lead an effective management team.

Fiscal

Develop and implement funding plans to ensure stable and sustainable support for agency programs and services. Grant writing ability and experience is crucial and could include endowment and corporate planned support. Expand local revenue generating including individual giving. Responsible for all aspects of financial and corporate management including yearly corporate filings and taxes, insurance, licenses, contract renewal, develop and administer annual budget and prepare monthly reports to the Board. Work efficiently and closely with the WWSC accounting department. Oversee purchases of equipment and supplies. Research potential new sources of funding for existing programs and creatively pursue sources for new programs. Work with staff, Finance Committee and Board of Trustees to prepare a budget that operates within the WWSC guidelines .

Oversee all programs, services, activities, and facilities to ensure all organization goals are met. Lead development and completion of community building goals with Board and staff. Oversee the Kitchen/ Nutrition Program including all operations, personnel, and maintenance or replacement of equipment. Anticipate major capital expenditures and communicate those needs to the Board. Ensure compliance with city, fire, health department, and safety codes and regulations, as well as, maintain updated official records and documents.

Human Resources

Recruit, hire, orient, train, and evaluate all staff in accordance with WWSC policies, the WWSC Employee Handbook, and state and federal laws. Ensure in-service training is performed according to grant contract guidelines. Provide yearly all staff training and staff development as appropriate; develop and maintain staff compensation, job descriptions, performance reviews, and personnel records. Manage backgrou nd checks and volunteer insurance compliance.

Maintain a safe environment for all employees, volunteers, guests and members; establish and monitor emergency procedures. Controls access to building through key and alarm codes.

Have and exhibit sensitivity and passion for working with older adults who are onsite either as guests or staff. Use sensitivity, listening skills and empathy to deal with opinions, suggestions and complaints.

Community Relations

Ensure the organization has a visible and effective public image, using all appropriate methods to include outreach to community partner agencies, media opportunities, advertising and social media. Develop and maintain a close working relationship with area seniors, senior communities, business partners, Chamber of Commerce, government agencies, elected officials, and other nonprofit agencies to promote the WWSC programs and activities in the community. Help prepare and distribute marketing materi als including brochures and the monthly newsletter. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and demonstrate strong public speaking skills.

Other Duties

Work varying schedules or hours when necessary to cover special events or functions. Attend trainings or meetings as requested or directed by the Board. Perform computer functions using Word, Excel, Publisher, and Quick books to prepare plans, reports, statistical analyses and other reports for the Board. Possess a strong working knowledge and understanding of database management, spreadsheets and other computer programs. Performs other duties as necessary or as assigned by the Board.

Develop and monitor programs relating to daily activities, social games and classes, and educational activities.

Be pro-active in keeping the Board fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors that may influence the WWSC.

Qualifications

  • Related d egree preferred
  • 3-5 years Non-Profit Management experience
  • Grant writing and/ or Fundraising experience
  • Financial acumen and budget management experience
  • Knowledge of State and Local Laws
  • Exhibit exceptional communication skills
  • Demonstrate empathy and good listening skills
  • Demonstrate strong leadership skills
