The Forensic Death Investigator I will perform field and office activities related to the investigation of sudden, unexpected and suspi! cious deaths that occur in King County.

WORK LOCATION: This position is located at the Medical Examiner's Office at 908 Jefferson Street, Seattle Washington. It requires working a varied schedule, 40 hours week, including nights.

Examples of Duties:
Respond and investigate death scenes; photograph, collect, gather and document evidence.

Transport human remains.

Adhere to county mandated protocols regarding control and documentation of personal property.

Document chain of evidence, and adhere to King County Medical Examiner's office process and protocols pertaining to collection and security of evidence.

Effectively interview family members, witnesses, and notify! next of kin of a death.

Effectively gather and inter! pret medical records.

Complete detailed investigative reports.

Work closely with law enforcement, medical providers, and legal agencies.

Release human remains to funeral homes.

Qualifications:
Thorough knowledge of human anatomy, and physiological functions of the human body; legal and medical terminology, and health and safety requirements relating to decomposed bodies.

Demonstrated ability to investigate death scenes and gather evidence; transport human remains; and secure, document and control personal property.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow directions.

Demonstrated ability to interview witnesses and family members and accurately document the chain of evidence, gather information, and maintain detailed accurate records.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and work with clients of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds in a ! respectful and compassionate manner.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, co-workers, law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys and members of the public of diverse cultural backgrounds; work reliably as a member of a multi-faceted professional team.

Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.

Demonstrated ability to lift, maneuver, and handle human remains averaging 175 lbs. (in various stages of mutilation, decomposition, and disease).

Desired Qualifications:
The most desirable candidates will possess a minimum of 1 year experience as a death scene investigator and have completed 2 years of college level coursework in a health related or criminal justice field.

Necessary Special Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to obtain one at the time of hire.

Nature of duties may require sustained physical effort i! nvolving manual skill, dexterity, hand/eye coordination, standing for l! ong periods of time and the ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies. Work environments entail exposure to deceased persons with severe traumatic injury, decomposed bodies and infectious cases, biohazards such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, meningitis, hepatitis and other human infectious agents; exposure to potentially toxic chemicals, live steam and frequent use of personal protective equipment and respirators. This work requires strict compliance with department policies pertaining to bloodborne pathogen exposure prevention, biohazard exposure prevention, toxic chemical exposure prevention, evidence handling policy and security requirements of evidence, standards and information.

A lifting test will be required where the candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to lift, move, and maneuver at least 175 pounds.

Public Health relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all Public Health positions.

Staff may be required to play an active role in the event of a public health emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

The selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation.

The Prevention Division limits the use of scented personal pro! ducts in order to protect fragrance sensitive employees. Adherence to this policy is a condition of employment.

Employees are required to adhere to OSHA/WISHA guidelines including but not limited to completing their mandatory trainings on time.
