The Attorney General's Office (AGO) serves more than 230 state agencies, boards, commissions, colleges and universities, as well as the Legislature and the Governor. The mission of the Office is to deliver the highest quality professional legal services to officials, agencies, and citizens of the state of Washington. The Office is comprised of over 500 attorneys and 700 professional staff.
The Attorney Generalâs Office is recruiting for a Legal Secretary 2 in the Natural Resources Division located in Olympia. Please note that there is the possibility of an in-training for this position from the Legal Secretary 1 level.
The Natural Resources Division represents the Commissioner of Public Lands, Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Board of Natural Resources, Forest Practices Board, and other related boards and committees providing a broad spectrum of client advice, dispute resolution and litigation services to DNR, which manages 5.6 million acres of forest, range, commercial, agricultural, and aquatic lands. Much of this land (3 million acres) is state trust land that provides revenue to help pay for construction of public schools, universities and other state institutions, and funds services in many counties. Since 1970, DNR managed lands have generated more than $6 billion. DNR also has fire protection responsibilities and supports the Forest Practices Board in protecting public resources on nearly 13 million acres of state and private forest lands. The division supports DNR in its efforts to regulate surface mine reclamation, provide technical assistance for forestry and mining and administer several programs designed to protect riparian areas, Natural Resource Conservation Areas and Natural Area Preserves.
Salary:

Duties:
This position supports the organizational mission by providing secretarial support for up to three or more Assistant Attorneys General, independently preparing documents as needed, organizing and maintaining case and advice files and other duties as assigned.
Duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
- Independently drafts routine pleadings and forms; schedules depositions, witnesses, court reporters, and hearing dates.
- Calendars litigation due dates and reminders.
- Prepares legal documents such as memoranda, contracts, agreements and leases.
- Organizes, assembles and maintains client advice and litigation files.
- Enters and updates client advice and litigation matters in the Case Management System database.
- Contacts clients, other attorneys and parties to legal actions to obtain and relay information.
- Monitors attorney mail, reviews and enters critical dates and information on attorneyâs calendars.
- Makes attorneyâs travel arrangements.
- Assesses case status with attorney and updates docket.
- Conducts basic legal and internet research.
- Organizes and prepares notebooks and exhibits for hearings or trial.
- Checks citations, quotations, and statutory references utilizing electronic or manual legal research.
- Drafts/edits routine pleadings and motions upon attorney request.
- Maintains knowledge and familiarity with the law library and case citations.
- Serve as Critical Events Reader for Division.
To qualify at the Legal Secretary 2 Level:
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) or Legal Secretary Certificate from an accredited vocational institute.
AND
In addition to the above paragraph, one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and two years clerical typing, or stenographic experience and two years of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) may be substituted for the two years of clerical, typing or stenographic experience.
OR
One year as a Legal Secretary 1.
To qualify at the Legal Secretary 1 Level:
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) OR Legal Secretary certificate or equivalent certificate from an accredited vocational institute.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency PLUS one year of clerical or keyboarding, PLUS one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeal Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses), may be substituted for one year of clerical, keyboarding experience.
