The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a Legal Secretary 1 in the Labor and Industries Division. This position is located in Seattle.

The work of the Labor and Industries (L&I) division tracks the missions of its client agency. This work includes litigation and client advice involving: workers’ compensation benefits for workers (e.g. wage replacement, medical care, vocational retraining, and permanent disability awards); questions about fair wages, and workplace conditions, safe work environments; contractor and building issues; crime victim claims; and a myriad of issues for Washington workers and employers.

Salary

Legal Secretary positions in our Seattle office receive 15% assignment pay in addition to the above listed salary.

  • Important Note : From July 1, 2011 through June 29, 2013 a 3% temporary salary reduction is in effect for most state positions. The salary listed above includes this reduction. Click here for specific information on the temporary salary reduction.
Duties:
The objective of this position is to perform legal secretarial tasks and give technical support to the Assistant Attorneys General representing the Department of Labor & Industries. The position is also responsible for performing paralegal duties 10% of the time.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Enter legal documents and case specific correspondence into Law Manager’s document and calendar tabs; note due dates and create tickles in attorney and secretary’s own Outlook calendar.
  • Update and maintain attorney Outlook calendar with conference, hearing, meeting, deposition and trial dates and times.
  • Advise attorney of upcoming commitments, deadlines, special items needing their attention and make travel arrangements when necessary.
  • Schedule witnesses, court reporters and conference rooms for hearing or testimony by deposition.
  • Compose and prepare various legal documents for signature of the Assistant Attorneys General including but not limited to legal briefs, motions and notice of appeals, stipulations, affidavits, subpoenas, deposition notices, memorandum, petitions for review, judgments and cost bills.
  • Proofread material making corrections for sentence structure, spelling, grammar, punctuation and format per agency style guidelines; review legal documents for proper format and ensure court rules are followed.
  • Independently verify case citations in briefs.
  • Prepare letters to physicians, hospitals, clinics, vocational experts to request history of claimants; compose letters to law enforcement officials requesting criminal background records, business records and certificate information.
  • Examine documents to assure that all necessary legal points have been covered, and that all legal deadlines and due process requirements have been met.
  • 10% Entry-level paralegal duties : Drafting standard interrogatories, assisting an attorney or paralegal in deposition summaries and case summaries; conducting basic legal research, drafting requests for production of documents and responses; organizing and preparing trial notebooks, pleadings and exhibits to be used at trial.
Qualifications:
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) OR Legal Secretary certificate or equivalent certificate from an accredited vocational institute.

OR

Graduation from high school or GED equivalency PLUS one year of clerical or keyboarding, PLUS one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeal Judge, review judge or equivalent.

Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses), may be substituted for one year of clerical, keyboarding experience.

Equivalent education/experience.
