Primary Duties The position supports the DOH’s mission to protect and improve the health of the state of Washington by providing professional and technical expertise by delivering quality legal services to Health Systems Quality Assurance Division programs and other entities. S/he contributes to meeting the objective of improving patient safety through facilities and health care professional regulatory processes, improving timelines of cases, apply appropriate sanctions for misconduct, working to ensure that open health care professional and facility cases are handled within set timelines, ensuring that DOH Secretary final decisions comply with sanction guidelines each quarter, ! and ensuring that board and commission final decisions comply with DOH sanction guidelines each quarter. Duties include:
Performs complex paralegal duties using specialized legal experience and knowledge, such as composing, analyzing, routing, and reviewing all legal documents and associating with appropriate legal / hearing / compliance files in support of a legal team.
Assists staff attorneys with case-related activities.
Tracks status of the legal teams cases and related documents for compliance with established timeframes.
Serves as a contact and responds to inquiries regarding case status and general information for the legal team and office.
Contract Management. Required Qualifications NOTE: Experience may have been gained concurrently. A skills test may be required. · Graduation from an accredited paralegal program. OR · Two (2) or more years (full-time equivalency) of experience as a paralegal. AND · Intermediate-level experience using ! MS Word to create, format, and edit tables, columns, and charts; import! data, sort table data, and perform calculations in tables; insert and format sections, and create headers and footers. · Intermediate-level experience using MS Excel to create and manipulate large or complex spreadsheets, use complex mathematical formulas to calculate data, and link worksheets; import data from other sources, filter lists, and create and format charts and graphs. · Basic-level database software/ web-based application(s) to accurately input information, design simple tables, queries, data entry forms, and/or reports; import data from other sources, sort records by multiple fields, find records, run simple queries, and filter by selection. · Experience using the internet as a research tool to research and download information. · Typing or keyboarding at 30 words per minute. · Demonstrated workload management and multi-tasking experience. Desired Qualifications NOTE: Experience may have been gained concurrently. · Experience involved in the regulation o! f health and facilities professions. Conditions of Employment · Willing and able to work indoors, at a desk/workstation the majority of a work day, in an open office environment with possible conversation and other noise distractions, with or without an accommodation. · Willing and able to work in a smoke-free, drug-free, alcohol-free, and scent-neutral environment. · Willing and able to work while exposed to hazards limited to those commonly found in government office environments, such as paper dust, ink, cleaners, adhesives, and other standard office products. · Willing and able to work the core business hours of 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with a scheduled lunch break. · Willing and able to occasionally work in excess of 40 hours per week and/or to adjust normally scheduled hours, which may include evening and weekends, to meet program needs and critical deadlines. · Willing and able to occasionally travel throughout the state and nationwide which may inc! lude overnight stays, as required, while performing the duties of this ! position.. · Willing and able to work in a stressful environment with multiple priorities and competing deadlines. · Willing and able to interact and work with customers, some of whom may be frustrated or distressed; in a positive, friendly and supportive manner that meets the needs and standards of the office and the agency. Note: This position is covered by an “Agency Shop” provision.
