The LIC work-study student will assist
LIC coordinator in completing the goals of the LIC, in serving students
interested in law as a career field as well as students who students who have
legal issues they seek to resolve.
Term of Position: Position begins after a qualified work study student is interviewed and selected and turns in their paper work to the AS Personnel Office. Position holder is required to attend any trainings or orientations as required by the office coordinators or Director.
About the Department:
Resource & Outreach Programs Statement of Purpose: The purpose of the seven centers of the Resource and Outreach Programs (ROP) is to provide information, advocacy, activities, and peer education to Western students. The ROP strives to emp! ower and support all members of WWUâs diverse community. The! ROP also provides the Opportunity for WWU students to gain valuable work, volunteer, and life experience.
Legal Information Center Statement of Purpose:
As a part of both the Associated Students (AS) and the ROP, the Legal Information Center (LIC) is dedicated to working with and for students. The primary goal of the LIC is to encourage students to make informed choices and to help students take an active role in their own legal matters. The LIC works to provide student access to legal resources, law schools, and legal career opportunities at the state and local levels.

Position Responsibilities:AS Employment Responsibilities:
Serve the membership of the Associated Students in a professional and ethical manner by:
Being familiar with and uphol! ding the AS Charter, all WWU policies, and all AS policies including the Employment Policy, Code of Conduct, and Program Standards.
Attending AS staff development events as assigned.
Being knowledgeable of the AS organization and its general operations.
Serving on search committees as designated by the AS Personnel Director.
Resource and Outreach Programs Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other ROP team members.
Behave in a manner that communicates the ROP philosophy which includes providing unbiased, non-judgmental information to students.
Participate in ROP inclusive events (such as VU Late Night, Red Square Info Fair, etc.)
Turn in paperwork to ROP Director in a timely manner (Program Planning Worksheets prior to dedicating any time or money to an event and Event Evaluations within one week after event).
Participate in office-tracking systems in order to assess client ! use, frequently asked questions/concerns, etc. Turn in weekly to the RO! P Director.
Attend a weekly meeting with the position supervisor. AS LIC Work Study Position Responsibilities:
Devote approximately 10 hours per week to AS business
Fill
out all forms per ROP/AS standards.
Participate
in staff meetings and trainings as directed by the LIC Coordinator and ROP
Director.
Assist clients as needed:
Actively listen to client questions and
concerns
Utilize office resources to assist clients
Familiarize your self with local agencies,
resources and attorneys
Refer clients to outside agencies or attorneys
as necessary
Research client questions/concerns as
applicable
Maintain client confidentiality
Contact attorneys for legal information as
needed
Help maintain and continually update resource
and referral files for your office.
Help maintain and update the library and
oversee the check-out process.
Develop a working relat! ionship with university
and community agencies and organizations, as well as individual attorneys in
the community including, but not limited to:
LAW Advocates
Whatcom Civil Rights
DVSAS
WWU ACLU
Whatcom County Public Defenderâs office
Bellingham City Attorney
Whatcom County Bar Association
Serve
students thinking about law school.
Maintain
office communications (voice mail, e-mail, social networking sites and campus
mail).
Maintain records and Event Evaluations to
assist in future planning.
Assist
the Coordinator in planning events and activities
Perform
other duties as needed or assigned. Required Qualifications:
Maintain
a minimum credit load throughout term of position of 6 credits for
undergraduates and 4 credits for graduates.
Maintain
a minimum of a 2.00 cumulative grade point average.

Ability
! to complete the entire term of the position.
Must
maint! ain work study requirements. Preferred Qualifications:
Basic knowledge of law and legal issues.
Ability to provide confidential assistance and create a safe space for clients
Basic knowledge of word processing, social networking sites and e-mail
Working knowledge of resources in the Associated Students, WWU and Bellingham.Customer service skills or experience.
Flexibility, interpersonal communication skills, problem solving ability, organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work with people of diverse opinions.
Ability to work independently and follow direction

Salary:
Level II
($9.19/hour)
The position holder will receive a financial award as directed by the
work study award letter. The weekly hours and work will be determined by the
amount awarded, t! he need of the office and the direction of the supervisor.
