The BIIA is a state agency independent from the Department of Labor and Industries. The BIIA hears appeals from decisions made by the Department in several areas. The three principal types of appeals are: Industrial insurance (workers' compensation). Safety citations under the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA). Crime victims' compensation.

Duties:
This position provides judicial assistance to Industrial Appeals Judges under the guidance of agency policies and procedures, assisting them in the management of cases, conduct of judicial proceedings, and issuance of written orders and decisions in ap! peals arising under the Industrial Insurance Act, Crime Victim! 's Compensation Act, and the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act.

Duties include: Typing, formatting and editing legal orders and memoranda, and composing correspondence. Editing proposed orders involves: verifying format; proper citation to depositions and transcripts; utilizing appropriate law library or Internet resources for legal research and to verify proper citation of case law and statutes; reviewing all quoted material for accuracy; substantively reviewing findings and conclusions for completion and/or legal sufficiency To avoid ex parte contact with judges, receiving all incoming phone calls for assigned judges and assisting parties with policy, rule and procedural questions; interpreting civil rules and Board policies; providing case status, following-up with phone calls and correspondence on behalf of the judge. Assisting judges with the management of caseloads, which may require conducting conference calls with parties, continuing or res! etting conferences and granting/denying extensions or continuances to parties. Tracking case files and performing extensive case management, i.e. maintaining medical records.

Qualifications:
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) OR Legal Secretary certificate or equivalent certificate from an accredited vocational institute.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and one year of clerical or keyboarding, and one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeal Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Leg! al Courses), may be substituted for one year of clerical, keyboarding e! xperience.

Equivalent education/experience.

Supplemental Information:
Notes : The hours of work are 8-5, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of a flex schedule. Minimal travel is required for meetings and events. This position is included in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees. The selected candidate must meet union shop requirements within 30 days of employment
