The Opportunity
As a Legal Assistant 3, you will support the Department of Health's mission to protect and improve the health of people in Washington State by providing legal expertise to the Division of Heal th Systems Quality Assurance (HSQA) programs and other entities.
Reporting to the Legal Support Staff Manager, you will have the opportunity to perform complex legal support for staff attorneys, case managers, paralegals, and assistant attorneys general (AAG) relating to the disciplinary process. This position also serves as the first point of contact for the Office of Legal Services.
Within HSQA, the Office of Legal Services processes complaints against healthcare providers and facilities, and brings disciplinary action against providers who have engaged in substandard practice or misconduct. We work to enforce disciplinary orders and ensure providers receive due process. HSQA regulates and supports more than 463,000 health professionals in 83 health professions, and 11,000 health groups and programs. Each year we review more than 14,000 complaints and inspect thousands of facilities.
What will you be doing? â" Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assist staff attorneys and paralegals by reviewing, preparing, and serving legal documents according to Department policies and State Court Rules.
- Review incoming documents and pair them with appropriate legal or compliance files.
- Maintain and update all case files for assigned attorneys.
- Provide backup support to other OLS Legal Assistants
- Follow DOH policies and procedures for preparing and tracking legal documents and correspondence.
- Conduct research on behalf of the assistant attorney generals (AAGs) which includes copying, scanning and retrieving background information from databases.
- Facilitate meetings with staff attorneys, paralegals, case managers, investigators, and AAGs to project timelines for filing and service of summary motions.
- Coordinate settlement conferences.
- Update information in the division's enforcement database.
- Respond to questions concerning policies and procedures of the legal office.
- Apply quality improvement thinking and tools to improve accuracy, timeliness, and overall quality.
Required Qualifications
- Option 1:Four years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge, review judge or equivalent.
OR
- Option 2:A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field of study and2 years of experience working in a legal office.
OR
- Option 3:Bachelor's degree andtwo (2) years of experience working in a legal office.
OR
- Option 4:One year as a Legal Assistant 2.
NOTE: Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted and every 5 years thereafter.
