The Seattle Police Department is seeking an experienced legal assistant to provide legal assistance and confidential administrative support for attorneys working in the Legal Department of the Seattle Police Department. This position reports to the Assistant Chief of Police and assists the Seattle Police Legal Advisors.

Perform research, draft, format, and edit pleadings and declarations for court along with its correspondence. Attend and assist at court and administrative hearings. A! ttend and assist with risk management meetings. Locate witness! es, and assist with obtaining affidavits. Prepare evidence and organize complex legal files; photocopy, fax, and retrieve documents. Transcribe tape-recorded and handwritten notes, process requests for discovery, public disclosure appeals, new lawsuits/projects, and claims information in the departmentâs databases. Process requests for information from labor unions. Process requests for civil matters (claims and litigation), and process public disclosure requests and appeals. Produce and redact documents in response to discovery and information requests, maintain accurate records of documents produced. Close case files by reorganizing, inventorying and/or purging documents as appropriate and preparing closing summary sheets. Maintain calendar grievances and arbitration to avoid missing deadlines, process high-volume incoming phone calls and mail, including but not limited to e-mail and correspondence. Schedule and coordinate meetings as required, and maintain a database o! f regional legal professionals.

Requires two years of post-secondary course work in legal secretarial or business skills and one year of litigation support work demonstrating familiarity with legal forms, terminology and documents (or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides evidence of the ability to perform the work of the class). Desired Qualifications:
Strong Microsoft Word skills with the ability to type 40 wpm, and experience with Excel and Access. Experience with claims, lawsuits, criminal and civil discovery, and public disclosure requests to provide police records, personnel records, department policy and training, or related reports needed to evaluate, respond or litigate each type of request. Must be detail oriented and possess strong proofreading, spelling, and grammar skills. Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality, and must pass a Seattle P! olice Department comprehensive background check. Investigation Litigati! on support and research experience a plus! The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment, with frequent interruption and changing priorities is also a plus. Exceptional customer service and the ability to work effectively both as a team member and independently with minimal supervision is needed. Ability to field, research and respond to requests for information and records to support a variety of public agencies, including other departments of the City and attorneys who represent the City. Finally, the ability to assist, research or respond to requests related to legal matters from the public, press and attorneys who represent the public in civil and criminal cases.
