Intellectual Ventures (“IV”) is a privately-held, invention investment company based in Bellevue, Washington. Its business involves creating, acquiring, patenting and licensing invention in a variety of technology areas. It commercializes inventions through licensing, spinning-off companies, joint ventures and industry partnerships.

IV has more than 800 employees. The team includes computer scientists, engineers, technical analysts and engineers, biotechnologists, physicists and mathematicians, intellectual property experts, attorneys, and licensing and business executives.

The IV Legal Department has more than 65 experienced professionals, including attorneys, paralegals, and operations staff.

Key Responsibilities:
This Legal Intern will report to the Chief Counsel, Licensing, and will help provide legal services supporting efforts to monetize patented invention portfolios through patent licensing. This individual will work closely with in-house counsel to finalize a variety documents to support patent license negotiations and drafting contracts for high-value patent license transactions. This role also may assist with patent law aspects of investment transaction-related matters. IV is a global business, pursuing a disruptive business model. Applicants for this position must be able to perform at a high level in a fast-paced, highly diverse, demanding, innovative environment.

Daily tasks include:
Research and advise on developments in patent law.

Coordinating communication and service requests from various clients.

Assisting with follow up with a variety of internal and external parties.

Assembling, updating, locating, and maintaining documents in shared files for review and access by other attorneys and clients.

Preparing and modifying draft agreements and other documents including nondisclosure, stand-still, evidence of use, claim chart, patent license, and amendments to the foregoing.

Receiving and responding promptly to requests from attorneys for assistance with document preparation and modification.

Uploading and retrieving electronic documents to SharePoint.

Assist developing and implementing guidelines and procedures for coordinating patent monetization activities with other internal company functions.

Key Qualifications and Required Skills:
Successful completion of second year law school and firm plan to practice patent law law primarily representing for-profit companies either in private practice (law firm) or as in-house counsel.

Excellent organizational and drafting skills.

Ability to communicate information effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to define and prioritize project activities and follow-up on project progress required.

Knowledge of IP laws generally, and patent law specifically and the ability and willingness to learn business and legal subject matter related to patent and other IP transactions.

Ability to work in a team setting and conduct and present self in a highly professional manner with both internal and external clients and personnel.

Strong organizational and analytical skills.

Ability to multi-task in dynamic environment.

Proven ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Ability to receive and respond to constructive feedback on work performance.

Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills.

Experience in all MS Office and SharePoint products and willingness to learn new programs.
