Microsoft’s legal team for the Online Services Division is looking for an attorney to provide “first-chair” legal support for Microsoft Advertising’s local advertising and programs for advertising technology partners, and to support business development for advertising incubation efforts as well as more established advertising programs.

In addition to providing day-to-day counseling on product strategies and solutions, this attorney will help shape Microsoft’s approach to novel legal and policy issues in the online space, including evolving data privacy and security issues and developing alternatives to traditional advertising models. These areas all present complex legal, regulatory, and policy challenges,

This attorney will work in a team environment with the other legal professionals supporting Microsoft’s online advertising business, including the rest of the Microsoft Advertising teams, the Bing and MSN teams, as well as the LCA teams providing corporate policy, regulatory, and intellectual property support. The attorney must be effective in project management and cross-group collaboration with a special focus on driving business results in a matrixed and rapidly developing environment. The position will be located in Bellevue, Washington.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Driving deals in a fast-paced and uncertain environment to help propel the business forward.
• Partnering with the R&D and business teams to define and execute strategies and solutions that support business, legal and policy initiatives.
• Counseling and advising clients on a broad range of complex legal, business, and strategic issues, including privacy issues related to data collection and usage.
• Facilitating early-stage business and technical engagements with customers.
• Driving process-related improvements to facilitate and increase the efficiency of the provision of business/commercial practices and legal services.

Successful candidates must have a J.D. from an ABA accredited law school, excellent academic credentials, and at least 5+ years’ experience as a practicing attorney. They should have experience drafting and negotiating a broad variety of agreements concerning the development, distribution, licensing, or ownership of software and online services, related intellectual property, or other commercial goods or services. Strong experience with online advertising and privacy issues is a plus. They must also have excellent analytic, legal drafting and oral and written communication skills. They must collaborate well with colleagues and be effective project managers, especially in driving cross-group projects. They must possess a strong client service focus and the ability to work efficiently, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi-dimensional projects.
