Conducts investigation of allegations in criminal cases from receipt of case to conclusion in order to assist defense attorneys in the preparation of the client's defense for trial, pretrial negotiations, and/or sent! encing.

WORK SCHEDULE : This position is covered by the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, and is overtime eligible. The work week is normally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Job Duties:
- Assists attorneys in analyzing cases from a defense perspective. This may include examination of discovery materials or other information to determine areas in which more factual information is needed, and attendance at pre-trial conferences. ⢠Conducts in-depth interviews with victims, witnesse! s, police personnel, medical personnel, clients and others; de! velops and prioritizes questions in order to obtain necessary information related to the case. ⢠Identifies and locates known or potential witnesses; assists attorneys in identifying appropriate expert witnesses. ⢠Obtains and reviews reports, records and other information. This may include, but is not limited to: address verification, education and employment records, military records, medical records, private industry records, government agency records and criminal records of state and defense witnesses. ⢠Conducts crime scene analysis and examination of other physical locations or objects to uncover and identify evidence that will assist in preparing the defense. This may include taking photographs and making diagrams to be exhibited in court. Communicates findings to attorneys. ⢠Prepares, processes and serves subpoenas on individuals and organizations. ⢠Prepares written summaries of interviews and other investigative findings; documents contacts. ⢠Organiz! es investigative case files: maintains and updates time logs, maintains calendar of due dates and court dates, confers with attorneys regarding investigation status. ⢠Provides trial assistance by communicating trial schedule to witnesses, responding to last minute investigation requests and testifying as necessary. ⢠Participates in training. ⢠Maintains current knowledge of related issues/standards in the legal environment and annually completes 15 hours of job-related continuing education. ⢠Attends and participates in unit and agency meetings as appropriate. ⢠Handles special projects and assignments. ⢠May supervise interns and volunteers ⢠Other duties as assigned.
1. Associate of Arts degree in related field and two years' related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Experience working with clients in the criminal justice system preferred. 3. Experience ! and training in conducting interviews. 4. Ability to read, analyze and ! interpret common operating instructions, procedure manuals, professional publications, government directives and legal documents. 5. Ability to respond to inquiries from clients, staff members and court personnel. 6. Ability to create reports and common business correspondence. 7. Ability to effectively present information to attorneys, court and clients. 8. Strong communication and interviewing skills. 9. Familiarity with legal terminology. 10. Ability to document interviews and meetings. 11. Knowledge of basic computer software and equipment. 12. Ability to type at least 45 wpm and operate standard office equipment. 13. Familiarity of mapping/diagramming software programs preferred. 14. Familiarity with criminal law and the legal system. 15. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and methods of criminal investigation. 16. Ability to work independently in setting priorities and meeting deadlines. 17. Demonstrated analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills. 18.! Ability to maintain confidentiality. 19. Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations and act accordingly. 20. Ability to prepare photographs, charts and other visual aids. 21. Washington state driver's license or the ability to travel within the County in a timely manner .
