Director of Academic Human Resources (AHR)
to support the mission of the Office of Academic Personnel by providing to the UW schools/colleges/campusesâ units effective academic human resources policy guidance and services on a wide range of issues and concerns that include, but not limited to, appointments, promotion/tenure, international scholar services, leaves and separations. The Director works closely with Academic Personnel leadership and leads a team of AHR consultants and specialists to ensure that personnel policies and practices appropriately address the needs of an extremely dynamic environment and support the UWâ! s core missions of teaching, research and service excellence! .
The primary focus of the Director is to demonstrate initiative and innovation toward improving and ensuring quality academic human resources services by means of effective policy and operational development and implementation of best practices while upholding compliance requirements.
The Director is a critical role that leads the AHR Office, serves as an active strategic planning member within Academic Personnel and as a key collaborator/partner with each school/college/campus unit and other central administrative units including UW [Staff] Human Resources and the Attorney Generalâs office.
The Director must demonstrate excellent management and administrative judgment, skill and discretion in handling sensitive academic personnel matters and documents, and thoughtfulness in addressing organizational and individual academic human resources issues.
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, the D! irector of Academic Human Resources is responsible for:
Leadership and Management (40%):
Provide strategic leadership and staff management of a team of AHR consultants and specialists; oversee the consultative and operational services of the AHR Office that involves strategic planning, development and policy guidance to AHR professional members in the delivery of AHR services; and provide professional mentorship to the AHR Assistant Director, AHR consultants and specialists as well as participate in the resolution or guidance surrounding situational/strategic/policy decisions involving complex personnel issues.
Policy Consultation, Development and Implementation (40%):
- Represent Academic Human Resources as a consultative resource to UW central administrative offices on personnel policies relating primarily to academic personnel, as well as lead or collaborate in policy review and development.
- Lead development and imp! lementation of Academic HR policies ensuring compliance with relevant s! tate and federal regulations with the goal of addressing issues in a proactive manner.
- Work closely with the Vice Provost and Assistant Vice Provosts for Academic Personnel, members in Academic Personnel, and other institutional leadership in collaborative development and implementation of personnel and related policies.
Continuously assess operational efficiency within the Office of Academic Human Resources; identify areas for improvement; and lead implementation of appropriate process or organizational changes. Work to establish and implement priorities; and align financial and operational resources with strategic plans, goals and decisions.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree;
- Minimum of 9 years with direct experience and increasing responsibility in human resources administration and management;
- Demonstrated ability to effectively s! upervise and mentor staff;
- Successful in initiating, leading and implementing policy, service and operational management changes;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Utmost level of discretion and confidentiality is required; and
- Comfortable and able to introduce and utilize technology tools to advance effectiveness and efficiency in service and operations areas.
Desired:
- Advanced degree in human resources administration, employment policy or other fields of study with similar knowledge, skills and experience.
- Experience with the procurement and/or implementation of enterprise HR/Payroll system.
- Experience in higher education, specifically at a university with extensive research activities and academic med! ical center.
- Experience or knowledge of international employme! nt.
- A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.
