The Attorney Generalâs Office is recruiting for a Legal Secretary 2 position in the Torts Division. This position is located in Tumwater.
The Torts Division defends tort claims and lawsuits against all state agencies, officers and employees. The majority of cases are based on actions brought under theories of liability for state actions such as highway design, release of inmates, injuries on state property, medical malpractice, employment, child care and custody, auto accidents, maritime injuries, false arrests and unreasonable force. Tort attorneys also provide legal and risk management advice to the Office of Financial Management and state agencies on tort m! atters.
Salary:

Duties:
This position serves as a Legal Secretary on a trial team providing litigation secretarial support to one or more Assistant Attorneys General. It also provides paralegal support as necessitated by the assigned attorney(s).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Preparation, service and filing of motions and pleadings and accompanying correspondence.
- Prepares initial responsive pleadings and correspondence to a civil lawsuit and subsequent answer and jury demand.
- Prepares discovery pleadings, both propounded and responsive.
- Calendars and tr! acks due dates and calls attention to critical deadlines.
- Composes motions and proposed court orders from studying the case file.
- Types trial briefs and motions.
- Assembles jury instructions, organizes trial notebooks, and advises attorneys of upcoming trial commitments.
- Prepares drafts for post-trial motions, appellate pleadings and briefs for state and federal appellate courts.
- Prepares settlement papers, dismissal pleadings and judgments at directions of attorneys.
- Notifies the court when a case scheduled for trial is settled.
- Dockets incoming and outgoing mail in the Case Management System (Law Manager.)
- Calendars case schedule orders and other critical dates in the Case Management System and posts events to appropriate calendars.
- Schedules depositions of the parties to tort lawsuits requiring the coordination of the schedules of deponents, attorneys and court reporters.
- Locating, collecting, logging and identifying, compiling, organizing, analyzing, maintaining and tracking records and factual information when received and follow up when not received.
- Reviews discovery requests provided by opposing party and extracts necessary information in order to obtain appropriate records.
- Tracks receipt of records to ensure timeliness and follows up via correspondence and/or telephone calls when records have not been received.
- Assists in the compilation and preparation of interrogatories and requests for production of documents and responses to same, assuring accuracy.
- Assists attorney during trial within the office and at court.
Associate of Arts degree in Legal Secretarial Science or equivalent degree from an accredited college (90 total quarter credit hours or equivalency, with at least 20 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) or Legal! Secretary Certificate from an accredited vocational institute.
AND
In addition to the above paragraph, one year of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and two years clerical typing, or stenographic experience and two years of legal secretarial experience for an attorney, Administrative Law Judge, Industrial Appeals Judge, review judge or equivalent.
Completion of a Legal Secretarial Course offered by a community college or business school (45 total quarter credit hours or equivalency in semester hours, with at least 10 quarter credit hours or equivalency in Legal Courses) may be substituted for the two years of clerical, typing or stenographic experience.
OR
One year as a Legal Secretary 1.
In addition, the most competitive applicants will have previous experience ! in civil litigation.
