The Attorney General's Office (AGO) serves more than 230 state agencies, boards, commissions, colleges and universities, as well as the Legislature and the Governor. The mission of the Office is to deliver the highest quality professional legal services to officials, agencies, and citizens of the state of Washington. The Office is comprised of over 500 attorneys and 700 professional staff.
The Attorney Generalâs Office is recruiting for a Paralegal 2/Discovery Coordinator in the Revenue Division. This position is located in Tumwater. There is the possibility of an in-training from the Paralegal 1 level.
The Revenue Division provides legal services to the Department of Revenue (DOR), which administers and collects the stateâs major excise taxes. The unit also provides legal services related to DORâs administration of the stateâs property tax system, DORâs assessment of operating property owned by public utilities, and DORâs administration of the stateâs estate tax and unclaimed property laws. The unitâs primary legal activity involves defending DOR in excise tax refund actions. The unit also handles property and miscellaneous tax litigation and advises DOR on tax and general governmental matters.
In addition, the Revenue Unit continues to play an important role in the implementation of the historic tobacco litigation master settlement agreement (MSA) by enforcing the escrow statute adopted by the Legislature applying to cigarette manufacturers selling tobacco products within the state that have not joined the MSA .
Salary
The salary listed above is for the Paralegal 2 level. Applicants qualifying at the Paralegal 1 level will start at a salary range 50 ($39,312 - $51,552 annually) and after completion of the in-training will move to the Paralegal 2 range.

This position provides paralegal support to attorneys for state excise, property and tobacco tax litigation. Work involves document discovery, document review and analysis, privilege review, creation of relational document databases, coordination with the client in use of a shared electronic document drive, research and investigation, organization and trial assistance. This position supports the mission of the Attorney Generalâs Office and the Revenue Unit by providing excellent, ethical, and effective litigation support for the Stateâs tax litigation.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Obtain,organize, and analyze electronic or paper documents in relational databases or otherwise in order to identify and process relevant evidentiary materials for use in motions, hearings, or trial.
- Assist attorneys with analyses of case facts for legal issue identification and development of legal strategy.
- Assist attorneys with all aspects of pretrial discovery, including investigations to gather relevant information and documents, attending depositions, and recommending follow-up or other action to the Assistant Attorney General.
- Coordinate with the client to obtain requested discovery and additional factual information and evidence in support of the case.
- Independently review and direct organization of litigation files and trial notebooks.
- Conduct legal research and shepardize cases as needed.
To qualify at the Paralegal 2 level:
Graduation from an accredited two-year paralegal program plus two years' experience as a paralegal or legal assistant OR
Graduation from an accredited four-year college and completion of a nine-month paralegal or legal assistant program plus one year experience as a paralegal or legal assistant
OR
Three years' experience as a paralegal or legal assistant
OR
Two years as a Paralegal 1.
To qualify at the Paralegal 1 level:
Two years' experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.
OR
Graduation from an accredited two-year paralegal or legal assistant course.
OR
Graduation from an accredited four-year college and completion of a nine-month legal assistant program or paralegal program or one year paralegal or legal assistant experience.
OR
Three years' experience as a legal secretary and 30 quarter or equivalent semester hours in nonsecretarial legal courses which are normally part of a paralegal or legal assistant course at a college or community college.
OR Equivalent education/experience .
