Provide strategic leadership on all aspects of professional development for all of the firmâs attorneys (including associates, counsel, senior attorneys, patent agents, senior counsel and partners);
Provide overall planning and management of all attorney training, mentoring, retreats, including consulting with practice groups relating to practice-specific development and identifying the most appropriate methods for delivering training;
Work with others who are responsible for attorney evaluation and compensation to ensure those programs are aligned with our professional development efforts;
Support the Associate Committee, the Attorney Development Committee, the Strategic Diversity Committee (and related affinity groups) and practice groups to develop programming and policies that will strengthen the development of attorneys firm wide;
Manage the firmâs MCLE tracking and compliance program;
Manage the continued development and implementation of an attorney development framework;
Manage the development of a formalized upward (360 degree) evaluation process;
Support the firmâs effort to develop and implement more modern and nuanced career paths;
Manage the exit interview process and conduct an exit interview for each departing lawyer;
Identify the most appropriate methods for training delivery for any given area; and,
Develop and conduct training programs where the Director of Professional Development has specialized expertise.
This position requires a solid understanding of the intricacies of large organizations, preferably a large law firm. Must be able to work effectively in a highly complex matrixed organization and be able to build consensus across functions and departments. Strong customer service skills with extensive experience in training and development functions across a large geographically dispersed professional services organization is also required. Must have a proven track record of initiating and leading change, have excellent written and verbal communications skills conveying confidence and credibility to multiple constituencies and the ability to analyze and summarize data, develop budgets and manage budgets effectively.
Eight-plus years in all aspects of professional development focusing on issues involving training, feedback, mentoring, career progression, diversity, professional skills development, design and implementation of competency models, upward review programs, and attorney integration is required. The ideal candidate would have either a JD or an MA or PhD in Organizational Development, or in a related discipline.
