The Defender Association Division of the King County Department of Public Defense seeks two paralegals to work full time. One paralegal position is for the ITA unit and the other is for Felony, Misdemeanor or Dependency. Since its inception in 1969, The Defender Association Division has undertaken not only to provide excellent representation to indigent clients, but also to address systemic inequities in the justice system. Work Schedule : 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. These positions meet the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for overtime. Work Location : These positio!   ns may be located at TDAD central location, 810 3rd Avenue, Su!   ite 800, 420 W. Harrison Street, Kent, WA, 1401 East Jefferson Street, Suite 400 or 908 Jefferson Street, 2nd Floor, Seattle, WA.  Job Duties:
 Tasks for ITA Paralegal may include :
 Assemble MHP paperwork and other documents for attorneys prior to client visit 
Assemble on-going petitions, case related documents, expert materials, and any documents needed for 14!   , 90, 180, revocation hearings. 
Gather and bring trial clothing. 
Assist attorneys getting needed documents for and to court/office. 
Handle Request For Closed Files. 
Obtain records for community-based hearings (i.e. from therapist). 
Transfer records to defense expert. 
Locate clientâs criminal attorney. 
File appeals. 
Check on warrants, police or jail holds in different counties. 
Verify client funding which may include checking with Social Security, DSHS, VA and banks. 
Confirm client's status w/ the VA. 
Go to Vital Statistics to get birth certificates; obtain school records; obtain employment records/unemployment, insurance records. 
Contact potential placements for client. 
Retrieve particular records from hospitals. 
And other assignments as directed by the supervisor. General Paralegal tasks may include : 
Respond to client file requests 
Gather records (not just medical records) 
File appeals 
Prepare billi!   ngs 
Determine date, nature, and forum of pending court hearings 
Schedule meetings and court events (this would cover all scheduling) 
Conduct conflict checks 
Assist in obtaining discovery 
Coordinate witness testimony 
Check for outstanding warrants, bail status and other charges 
Obtain Court Services interview sheets 
Verify information for bond hearings 
Coordinate with other paralegals to obtain relevant information generated at SRA Calendar 
Contact Department of Corrections of King County Probation to obtain probation violation reports 
Litigation assistance (not limited to trial) 
Organize Trial Notebooks/Exhibit Notebooks 
Conduct traditional and computerized legal research of statutes and caselaw, utilizing Westlaw/Lexis-Nexis 
Access and gather records via electronic court records 
E-file and services of pleadings 
Setting calendar motions 
Maintain paralegal timesheets 
Compose letters of discovery, draft pleadings, email correspondence 
Legal liaison between attorney and d!   ifferent agencies 
Schedule depositions and/or interpreters 
Coordinate experts including funding, review and index discovery 
Assist in maintaining case file 
Work with case management system 
Deliver exhibits 
Ensure Transport Orders signed and submitted to Department of Corrections Dependency Paralegal tasks may include : 
Conduct conflict checks 
Conduct criminal history check on parties and witnesses using JIS and other research tools as appropriate 
Assist in obtaining discovery; redact discovery 
Schedule hearings and provide relevant parties with notice 
Organize discovery, pleadings and trial notebooks 
Prepare and process appeal packets and track appeal filing deadlines 
Coordinate prompt delivery of discovery to newly appointed counsel upon withdrawal and ensure that Notices of Withdrawal are filed and cases are closed in a timely manner 
Schedule interpreters 
Schedule meeting places 
Obtain transcripts, copies of !   audio recordings and videotapes of court 
Draft motions, orders, dec!   larations and other documents as needed 
File and/or E-file legal documents and service of process, serve working copies to the Court and parties 
Assist in the preparation and filing of documents necessary to obtain funding for expert services; process invoices for payment 
Schedule face-to-face jail visits through King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention 
Process withdrawals and assignment requests for the Department of Public Defense 
Assist attorney in trial preparation and coordination; coordinate witnesses, prepare trial exhibits, prepare trial notebooks, keep parties informed as requested by the attorney, deliver trial clothing to jail for incarcerated clients and other tasks as requested by the attorney 
Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor 
 Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
 Required Education and Certification: BA or equivalent criminal paralegal experience Completion!    of accredited paralegal certificate course Preferred : Spanish, written and spoken 
 Supplemental Information:
 Paralegals provides support to attorneys and may perform case preparation, investigative and information gathering tasks necessary for providing effective assistance of counsel. The paralegal may communicate with a wide network of court and hospital officials, law enforcement, legal and social agencies, as well as clients and their family members. Paralegals assist attorneys in all phases of defense, receiving direction and guidelines from division supervisor and their assigned attorneys. There is considerable latitude in working independently and exercising good judgment as to how the assigned workload is accomplished.
