UWMC has and outstanding opportunity for a CODING MANAGER - HIM Under the general guidance of the department Director(s), the CODING MANAGER - HIM position is responsible for directing coding operations for Inpatient, Ambulatory Surgery, Ambulatory Clinics, and the Emergency Room at both UWMC and HMC in accordance with accepted industry standards and practices and within est! ablished medical center(s) guidelines. This position is also required to work with other UW Medicine entity departments on coding related topics and could potentially take on oversight and develop the integration of other UW Medicine entity coding operations.
⢠Administers the medical center-wide coding effort, fiscal review, and research data administration functions of the department. ⢠Assures data flow activities, documentation, abstracting, coding, data processing and interpretation yield quality outputs by utilizing effective quality control procedures. ⢠Promotes and maintains positive working relationship within Health Information Management itself and with other departments, physicians, and staff across UW Medicine. Provides consultation and collaboration as necessary.
⢠Identify strategic integration opportunities across UW Medicine related to coding operations. ⢠Recommends creation or changes in policies and/or procedur! es related to coding across UW Medicine to meet the needs of other depa! rtments for licensure, certification and accreditation as those needs relate to medical record documentation, coding and/or statistics. ⢠Assists the Director(s) in designing and implementing health information programs to respond to reporting requirements from physicians, administration and external agencies; e.g., case mix reports, APG/APC design and implementation. ⢠Directs the operational implementation of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS for all coding staff within scope of responsibility or as outlined by HIM Director(s) and UW Medicine ICD-10 Program Office.
⢠Direct further development of the UW Medicine health system sponsored Coding Internship/Trainee Program including: selecting intern candidates, reporting on progress and expense/savings impacts of the program to HIM Director(s), making recommendations on final hire decisions based on established criteria. ⢠Facilitates the effective and efficient use of all systems utilized in coding for t! he medical centers and clinics including: EPIC, 3M Health Data Management/Encompass 360, eCode, Cerner, and others as appropriate. ⢠Acts as the leadership liason between coding management/staff and Clinical Documentation Management Program leadership personnel, partners with CDMP at the medical center(s) to ensure programmatic targets are communicated and monitored. ⢠Manages remote worker program to ensure productivity targets and efficient work patterns are maintained.
Address and correct deviation where identified and necessary. Assess staff for fit and appropriateness to work remotely to promote minimizing the on-site office space footprint. ⢠Manage the implementation of the 3M computer assisted coding software. ⢠Subject matter expert for hospital based coding and DRG assignment.
Knowledge and understanding of how coding impacts the UHC risk model, quality indicators, compliance, and other regulatory metrics. ⢠Interact with! medical staff leadership, nursing leadership, Clinical Resource Manage! ment leadership, the Clinical Documentation Improvement Program leadership, and other department leaders to facilitate problem solving, identification of process improvements, and workflow redesign related to coding is essential. Operations Management: ⢠Exercises team leadership skills and qualities both within the department and throughout the medical center to assure effective day-to-day operations. ⢠Creates and/or reviews policies, processes and procedures for collecting and processing health information in both manual and automated systems.
⢠Communicates effectively with the Director(s), subordinates, patients, hospital staff, attorneys, insurance agents, review/audit groups and other community representatives. ⢠Assists in the development of qualitative and quantative standard for the departmentâÂÂs various functions in concert with the department management team. ⢠Implements operational changes or improvements as necessary to a! chieve compliance with industry specific rules and regulations in partnership with UW Medicine Compliance. ⢠Directs coding practice and interpretation as consistent with applicable coding guidelines, coding clinic, and other industry recognized authority to support the quality initiatives of the health system.
⢠Accountable for supporting and monitoring the overall quality of coding performed by staff. ⢠Provides leadership to software implementations that impact the coding team Fiscal Management: ⢠Assists the Director(s) in financial planning, budgeting and monitoring to support a cost-effective health information program. ⢠Works with the department management team to create the annual department budget and any needed periodic monitoring. ⢠Develops, justifies, implements and monitors the annual budget for coding.
⢠Responds to institutional requirements to adjust budget because of program expansion and/or retrenchmen! t. ⢠Generates and implements new ideas for reducing costs while m! aintaining or improving service levels. ⢠Manages outside contract services and works to reduce expense whenever possible. Personnel Management: ⢠Provides overall supervision of coding staff with direct supervison of 3 Supervisors and 1 Compliance Analyst for Research Coding & Billing ⢠Creates, reviews and/or refines existing job descriptions to assure accuracy and that changing medical center needs are met.
⢠Hires, assigns responsibilities, identifies training needs, provides consultation and reviews work accomplishments. ⢠Coaches and mentors staff in need of support or improvement, work with established low, middle, and high performer model for optimum staff performance management. ⢠Resolves employee complaints or concerns and facilitates improvements in employee engagement. Engages in activtities that supports retention and facilitates recruitment.
⢠Reviews and recommends changes in the departmentâÂÂs various ! employee manuals, including specific job processes and procedures. ⢠Works with the department management team in developing education programs and materials which focus on changing concepts, skills, values, and/or refinement of health information practice. Medical Staff Liasion: Within the department Director(s) perview, works with both individual physicians and medical staff organizations to resolve medical record documentation issues and provide education on opportunities ⢠Attends Health Information Management meetings as needed. ⢠Assists the Director(s) in educating the medical staff on data management for administrative and/or reimbursement purposes.
Other: ⢠Represents the department on various committees and task forces as assigned by the Director(s). ⢠Represents the department and the medical center to Health Information Management Directors from other hospitals and universities and community college facility. ⢠Coord! inates student practicums as needed. ⢠Participates in professiona! l association activities, keeping informed in current professional standards, including continuation requirements for registration or accreditation.
⢠Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients. REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management Minimum five years previous coding management experience in a large multi-specialty hospital or equivalent health related organization.
Must be a current Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or a current Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) with the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).
