! The Washington State Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) seeks a dynamic, goal-driven, detail-oriented, highly organized leader to oversee the Civil Rights Department. The Civil Rights Department responds to complaints of civil rights violations in the Muslim community, and develops effective response strategies to effect positive societal changes.
Responsibilities include:
Case Management/Resolution
Oversee cases involving a broad spectrum of complaints of religious discrimination, profiling, and denial of religious accommodations, including but not limited to issues with law enforcement, employment, education, immigration, vandalism, hate crimes, and jail/prison conditions.
Ensure follow-through with offending parties and clients.
Maintain databases and metrics about abuses reported to CAIR-WA.
Develop civil rights department's procedures and capabilities, e.g.: investigation skills and pro! tocols; case management process (intake/documentation/review).!
Expand referral network for cases outside of CAIR-WA's scope.
Develop Winning Advocacy Strategies
Assertively pursue successful resolutions to incidents of discrimination utilizing current and developing new strategies including advocacy letters, meetings, media work, call-in campaigns, and utilizing network of volunteer attorneys.
Affect policy change where needed. Pursue and develop strategic relationships with senior government, law enforcement, and other officials and drive desired outcomes.
Collaborate with civil rights activists nationally, across CAIR chapters and partner organizations, to ensure the local success of any nationwide advocacy campaigns and collaborate on mutually relevant issues.
Attend sensitive meetings with law enforcement agencies and community organizations.
Partner with Executive Director to maximize media exposure and public awareness of CAIR-WA's efforts, including drafting press r! eleases, speaking at press conferences, and aggressively pursuing positive media opportunities related to casework.
Community Education
Deliver "Know Your Rights" presentations at schools, organizations, and religious institutions. Assertively seek opportunities to deliver these workshops.
Produce monthly digest, case studies, and annual report to inform the public of CAIR-WA's civil rights efforts and to encourage reporting of cases by the community.
Maintain proactive contact with mosques and community organizations across the Northwest to ensure public safety and increase case reporting.
Contribute to CAIR-WA's social media outlets including Facebook and Twitter.
Develop innovative strategies to distribute "Know Your Rights" information to the community including posters, videos, emails, business cards, etc., and distribute on an ongoing basis.
Volunteer Management
Recruit volunteer attorneys to assi! st in cases.
Effectively manage a number of competent Civil Ri! ghts Interns, including hiring and supervising to perform many of the above-mentioned tasks, and evaluating performance.
Required Skills & Experience:
Bachelor's degree plus 2-5 years of experience in civil rights work including two years of management experience.
Strong written communication skills, with attention to detail. Candidate must email a writing sample from recent prior work, or produce an original response to the question: "What Civil Rights Advocacy for Minority Groups Means to Me." (400 â" 600 words)
Experience in public speaking, high-stakes negotiation, and tactful intrapersonal communication.
Ability to take initiative and collaborate with resourcefulness and minimal supervision.
Ability to cut through details, define desired outcome, and efficiently drive toward goals.
Ability to work under pressure, juggle multiple competing tasks, and meet deadlines.
Experience in managing multipl! e interns and volunteers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
Access to car (mileage reimbursed), a valid driver's license and insurance a strong plus.
Evening, weekend and holiday work occasionally required.
Knowledge of civil rights law and experience in community organizing a strong plus.
Working knowledge of Islamic religious practices.
