! The Assistant General Counsel, working in conjunction with the General Counsel, will be responsible for the internal handling of WSBA litigation and supervision of litigation conducted by outside counsel; handling contracts; and managing and responding to public records requests. The Assistant General Counsel provides legal advice and counsel for the WSBA, the Board of Governors and Executive Director, and to other WSBA staff and volunteers in appropriate situations. Additionally, the Assistant General Counsel litigates, or assists outside counsel in litigating, matters involving the WSBA and its Board of Governors, WSBA staff and volunteers, in both state and federal litigation. The Assistant General Counsel will Assist General Counsel or assume primary responsibility for reviewing, drafting, and negotiating contracts. This position will also receive, review and respond (or coordinate or oversee response) to public records requests.
This position must be able to d! raft, review, and analyze multiple kinds of litigation matters and litigation-related pleadings and other documents, and handle litigation on a first chair basis, as well as overseeing outside counsel who are handling litigation for the WSBA. The position also must be able to draft, review, and analyze multiple kinds of contracts of varying size and scope and potential financial impact to the organization. Further, this position must be able to grasp and apply multiple layers of legal authorities in reviewing and responding to public record requests. The position on occasion also will be presented with requests for legal analysis and advice on ethics issues, in very short timelines. Familiarity with Washington State Supreme Court rules ranging from general rules, admission, licensing, discipline, lawyer conduct, professional ethics, and the practice of law is required as well as the ability to draft, review, and communicate opinions on proposed court rules concerning the pr! actice of law.
This position also will be asked to assist with! other duties as assigned by General Counsel or the Executive Director, including, but not limited to, serving as liaison to WSBA Committees, Boards, Task Forces and Councils; coordinating & participating in records retention activities; instruction and training for staff and others; outside speaking engagements; public outreach and review of written materials in electronic or hardcopy form.
Education: Juris Doctor, or successful completion of WSBA Law Clerk Program.
Requirements: Must be admitted to practice in the state of Washington, in active status and in good standing, for a minimum of seven years. Knowledgeable and actively experienced as first chair in litigation. Experienced in contract review, negotiation, and management, and in providing direct advice to clients (preferably both organizational and individual clients). Ideal candidates must have an excellent reputation in the legal community; a mastery of examining relevant informat! ion and formulating legal recommendations on emerging issues; exceptional public speaking and presentation skills; experience leading people towards accomplishing organizational goals; and the ability to work collaboratively, diplomatically, strategically, and with sound judgment with all audiences comfortably.
Proficiencies: This position must be able to grasp and apply multiple layers of legal authorities in reviewing and responding to public record requests. The successful applicant will have a high level of analytical and decision making skills; be able to understand and comply with Admission to Practice Rules; Rules for Enforcement of Lawyer Conduct; Rules of Professional Conduct; WSBA Bylaws; Board of Governors (BOG) policies and meeting/parliamentary procedure. The position on occasion will also be presented with requests for legal analysis and advice on ethics issues, often with very short timelines.
