The Global Business Center (GBC) delivers more than 75 programs annually for students, faculty, and the business community that build global business expertise. Over 6,000 individuals directly benefit from center programs each year. It is one of 33 centers of excellence for international business education and research designated and supported by the U.S. Department of Education.
The GBC transforms students by: 1) enhancing the curriculum to prepare them for the global markets of the future, 2) leveraging the global business expertise of the Pacific Northwest and 3) challenging them to become global business problem-solvers. We have an outstanding o! pportunity for an Assistant Director, Global Business Center to provide leadership, strategic planning, organization-building, and project management to ensure the successful launch and ongoing management of programs and activities designed to build global business expertise and connections. This position directs GBCâÂÂs annual worldwide Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition Programs, manages the Foster Business Research Group partnership program with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and runs the Visiting Executive and Visiting Scholars programs for individual executives and scholars from outside the U.S. Key Elements Manage Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition Programs Primary responsibility for the direction and implementation of a complex, multi-stage, worldwide business plan competition, and related programs, focused on alleviating poverty in the developing world.
The competition was launched in 2004. In 2013, 91 student teams from 29 countrie! s and 67 universities participated. More than 200 people serve as judge! s/coaches/mentors at the eventâÂÂs five rounds of competition. Planning and execution on this annual event takes a full 12 months.
The program is at a critical juncture with its 10 year anniversary in 2014. As a result, it's important to demonstrate accomplishments to date and convey a vision for the future to garner further support. The program presents a unique global business education opportunity that is available to the entire UW student population in addition to their peers around the world, this position is responsible for effectively engaging all of those student populations. Event Logistics: o Develop program timeline, budget, objectives, work breakdown, and policies and manage to them o Manage competition events including screening rounds, a welcome event, a coaching round, corporate/organization visits, educational presentations, competition preliminary and final rounds, and an awards ceremony o Manage competition logistics including team invitations,! judge/mentor invitations/preparation, on and off-campus facilities, accommodations, meals, transportation, equipment/supplies, insurance, printed materials, competition prep resources o Coordinate additional faculty/staff/student involvement as needed to accomplish project objectives in areas of academic content, fundraising, corporate/community involvement, program content, media/public relations, team invitations/communication/hospitality.
o Recruit, select, train and mentor student volunteers o Identify keynote speaker and coordinate his/her travel and event logistics. Cultivating and managing Student Participation: o Develop and lead information sessions to promote the competition to prospective and current students. o Speak across campus and at national conferences to draw faculty and students from multiple disciplines and geographic locations to the event. o Create announcements, web pages, etc.
that provide information (deadlines and deliverables) ! for students in the competition. o Create and maintain on-line registra! tion forms, listserv, and database of student participants. o Manage cross-campus networking events to encourage multi-disciplinary team formation. o Communicate with student teams as needed to answer questions, provide advice, and coordinate with a mentor or coach.
o Communicate details of the event via social media to the larger community. o Survey teams after the event to solicit their response to the event, the networking with judges, and their needs going forward. o Track student involvement and progress after the competition. o Create and implement pre and post competition training/resources for competitors o Identify countries, regions and disciplines not being reached by the program and develop and implement strategies to address those gaps.
Fundraising: o Create annual budget (approx. $180K), set fundraising targets and manage to expectations. o With the center director, identify prospective sponsors and renew current sponsors o Maintain re! lationships with key program supporters and engage new supporters o Write annual reports required by sponsors o Create âÂÂbenefits of sponsorshipâ documents and other fund-raising materials. o Ensure sponsor recognition, create post-event thank-you notes, and coordinate donor engagement.
o Create a plan for communication with and engagement of alumni o Support program expansion as funding permits o Develop community support locally and globally through organizational partnerships and communications o Manage Advisory Committee including regular meetings/communications, engagement, and recruitment o Develop key measures of success and means for evaluating program and demonstrating its success Judge/Mentor Cultivation & Communication o Develop and maintain judge/mentor database, updating personal information and history with the center. o Identify and meet with potential judges/mentors and determine best entry point into the competition. o Contact and confirm ! mentors for each team, connect them with the teams, orient mentors, fol! low-up with both mentors and teams to ensure progress, and create post-event thank-yous. o Contact and confirm judges for each round of the event, maintain communication and provide instructions for judges prior to the event, and create post-event thank-yous.
o Evaluate mentors and judges for future engagement. Post-Event Follow-Up o Process, with budget manager, payments to the student teams that have won awards. o Create individual acknowledgements for all supporters o Maintain excellent and detailed project records. o Evaluate and implement program improvements.
o Report to the director and GSEC advisory committee on annual results. o Track competition alumni âÂÂ" both as companies and individuals Manage Foster Business Research Group Program The Foster Business Research Program is a partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Effective management of this partnership and relationship is critical to the Foster School. It is a growing program ! with the likelihood of exponential growth in the next 1-2 years.
The requirements include: 1)recruiting and selecting high quality students 2) navigating relationships and expectations of the Gates Foundation, student participants, faculty mentors, and partners at the UW Department of Global Health, UW College of Education and UW Evans School of Public Affairs 3) tracking progress and results to guarantee contract renewals and compliance with Gates Foundation and UW policies 4) developing and implementing an operational plan that can handle the current program and its predicted future growth o Serve as coordinator and key support person for faculty-mentored MBA student projects with external and cross-campus partners o Manage partner relationships o Determine and manage to annual budget o Recruit students/faculty as needed o Track faculty/student involvement and project results o Inform key constituents about program success, results and highlights o Maintai! n program website Run the Visiting Executive & Visiting Scholar Program! s for individual executives and scholars from outside the U.S. The Visiting Executive and Visiting Scholars programs have demonstrated revenue growth potential. This position will evaluate that potential and then create and implement a strategy for realizing it. Managing this program requires partnership with all 5 academic departments of the Foster School as well as building and maintaining positive relationships with key faculty across departments, and the UW International Scholars Office.
It requires a cross-culturally savvy professional who knows how to anticipate and address the expectations of executives from other cultures even when they are not clearly communicated. o Visiting Executive Program: ⢠Manage the program budget ⢠Develop and maintain relationships with sponsoring agencies ⢠Recruit qualified executives and develop academic and cultural programs that meet their objectives ⢠Provide academic advising and administrative support ! for visiting executives ⢠Coordinate tutoring and faculty support for visiting executives ⢠Coordinate/collaborate with Foster School Executive Programs ⢠Create and implement strategic plan for program growth and development o Visiting Scholar Services: ⢠Maintain master list of departmental visiting scholars ⢠Disseminate information about events and opportunities to visiting scholars ⢠Provide administrative support as needed in coordination with departmental admins ⢠Provide opportunities for visiting scholars to meet one another and UW community ⢠Evaluate the need for additional support services and develop proposals Manage Global Social Entrepreneurship Community Outreach Program o Determine and implement strategy for more deeply integrating competition into other UW and/or community activities o Develop annual strategy, objectives, and plans with on and off-campus partners o Create annual budget and manage to it o Create event! s and manage logistics o Respond to inquiries regarding partnership opp! ortunities o Market events to business school students, faculty and other constituents Provide general Global Business Center support o Support major Global Business Center team events/projects including competitions, fundraising proposals and assessment. o Hire, train and supervise the work of student assistants in delivering program objectives o Maintain excellent and detailed records, including program participation o Develop and implement program evaluations and act on results o Other duties as assigned Requirements: A BachelorâÂÂs degree in international relations, business, or related field. At least five years program/project management experience in a business or nonprofit organization.
Significant event planning experience. Ability to be an effective member of a team while independently managing projects and responsibilities with minimal supervision. Strong written and verbal communication skills and presentation/public speaking skills. Proficiency in M! S Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired: MasterâÂÂs degree in international relations, business or related field. Experience working with people from different cultures, overseas living/work experience, especially in emerging markets and/or East Asia. Educational institution/university/fundraising work experience a plus.
Working knowledge of databases and social media. Communications experience. Demonstrated ability to work closely with faculty, students and members of the business and non-profit communities.
