This position is responsible for assisting in the orderly and expeditious dispatch of court business by maintaining custody of and coordinating the movement of! individual trial jury pools. This position will have substantial contact with all parties in the Criminal Justice system, including defendants, judges, lawyers, corrections staff and the public. Distinguishing Characteristics This is a stand alone temporary position classification used by Kitsap County to assist with court business. Positions in the classification are ârelief/on-callâ temporary positions and are covered by requirements of the Kitsap County Extra Help Policy. The incumbent is responsible for the flow and completion of work within general guidelines and under general supervision. Work is reviewed on a weekly basis or as needed for accuracy, progress and adherence to established procedures and policies. QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Required Education and Experience Two years experience working with the public in customer service, office environment, legal or in the court environment; or any equivalent combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the work. Required Licenses, Certificates, Examinations/Tests and Other Requirements Please note: The incumbent is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all of the following required licenses, certifications and other requirements. Prior to employment the successful candidate must:
Pass a criminal history background check through law enforcement.
Submit official transcr! ipts from an accredited college or university if education is being used to meet the minimum qualifications.
Demonstrate ability to be available to report for assignments on short notice. At time of appointment the successful candidate must:
Possess a valid Washington State Driverâs License.
Ability to fulfill all traveling requirements of this position and meet the qualifications and guidelines of the Fleet Risk Control Policies in the operation of a motor vehicle on County business. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: Courtroom etiquette and procedures, and jury impaneling and handling. General office practices, procedures and equipment. Basic record keeping principles and techniques. Case management systems. Personal computers. Statistical methods. Business English and business arithmetic. Correct and effective use of English grammar, spelling and punctuation. Legal court system. Ability to: Appear for scheduled work with regular, reliabl! e and punctual attendance. Establish and maintain cooperative, effectiv! e, and productive working relationships using tact, patience and courtesy. Effectively plan and organize work and complete tasks within prescribed timeframes. Work over 40 hours in a workweek and report to work on short notice. Perform and enforce with tact, diplomacy, and firmness. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, public officials, and the general public. Maintain professional demeanor under heavy workload and stressful situations. Operate computer and office machines. Organize, prioritize and coordinate work. Research and prepare reports. Be courteous and polite in stressful situations. Compose clear written correspondence. Effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in public speaking/presentations highly desirable. Working Conditions/Physical Activities (The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the es! sential functions of this job. Work is performed primarily in high-stress office and courtroom environments. At least 75% of the work is performed in a courtroom. A degree of physical danger is inherent while working in potentially volatile situations in a courtroom. Positions in this class typically require: reaching, handling/grasping documents, sitting and/or standing for extended periods of time, walking short distance, vision sufficient to read source materials and computer screen data and repetitive motions for computer use. Requires exertion of force of 20 pounds occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently to lift/carry/move objects, files, and other material to and from court.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:

Essential Job Functions: Assist judge in ! maintaining order and decorum in the courtroom; keep order and maintain court and jury facilities. Assist the court and counsel with impaneling the jury; escorts jury to and from the courtroom; provide personal services to jurors (makes phone calls, furnishes meals) during jury sequestration; transmit instructions and exhibits from court to jurors; remain outside jury room until a verdict is reached. Provide regular jury orientation presentations for each new jury panel, ranging in size from 35 to 100 potential jurors at any given time; communicate juror expectations, court rules and instructive guidelines.
