Intellectual Ventures is looking for an experienced patent attorney to join their US Patent Development team. Reporting to the Head of Patent Development, the patent development manager (PDM) will be part of a team of patent professionals involved in patent acquisition and prosecution, including the management of outside counsel. Strong patent skills and technological breadth in electrical engineering required with working knowledge of circuits, physics, electro-magnetic and optical systems/components, software, materials and manufacturing of devices are important. The PDM will work closely with business managers and assist senior patent development managers (Sr. PDMs) in the development and management of a large patent portfolio. The PDM must possess good management and interpersonal skills, be a self-starter, and able to integrate well with the business and legal teams.
Responsibilities:
Assist Sr. PDMs in the strategic management of patent prosecution in wide technical areas.
Work with legal and business team members to resolve IP issues.
Assist in the analysis, review and evaluation of the quality, cost-effectiveness and scope of work performed by outside patent counsel.
Assist in the review and analysis of new technologies.
Assist in the management of US and foreign patent applications, over varied time zones.
Key Qualifications and Required Skills:
J.D. degree from a reputable, American Bar Association accredited law school.
M.S. (preferred), B.S. required in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Computer Engineering with related engineering experience.
Registered to practice before US Patent and Trademark Office.
Admitted to Washington State Bar (or another State Bar).
At least 5 years experience as a patent attorney in private practice, with primary emphasis on drafting and prosecuting patent applications in electrical engineering technologies.
Excellent English communication and writing skills.
Excellent organizational skills a must.
Proven track record of managing a large docket of cases.
Experience in Asia, or Asian language skills, an advantage.
US prosecution experience including extensive drafting and prosecution.
Non-US (Foreign) prosecution including PCT and EP prosecution experience.
Familiarity with U.S. Technology Export Regulations (Non-US a plus).
In-house experience or other experience managing attorneys.
Broad technical or business knowledge of electronic circuits, electro-mechanical systems, electromagnet or optical systems, telecommunications, software, physics, semiconductor devices and materials.
