The center's purpose is to bring business and scientific minds together in the classroom and provide the framework and incentives to convert student ideas into thriving businesses.
We have an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director to direct CIEâs annual statewide Business Plan Competition (including fundraising for a "challenge" gift from alumni), manage the new 6-month Foster Accelerator program for BPC teams that are serious about starting their companies, develop a mentor network of entrepreneurs to advise student start-ups, organize a national faculty research symposium and doctoral consortium each September, and work with an alumni committee to lead the CIE Alumni Network.
BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION (~60%)
Lead responsibility for the direction and implementation of a complex, multi-stage, statewide Business Plan Competition, which was first launched in 1998. In 2012, for example, 101 student teams from 10 Washington universities and colleges participated in the competition. More than 400 people from the Seattle community were judges/coaches at the eventâs five rounds of competition. Thirty Seattle firms and foundations sponsored the competition, along with more than 50 alumni who contributed to the "Friends of the BPC Challenge." Planning and execution on this annual event takes a full 12 months.
Create annual budget (approximately $150K), set fund-raising targets with director, and manage to expectations.
Select and mentor MBA co-chairs, helping them acquire project management and leadership skills while supporting project delivery. Recruit representatives from the Executive MBA, TMMBA, and evening MBA programs to be part of the Business Plan Competition leadership team. Organize weekly steering committee meetings from October through early June.
1. Event Logistics
- Develop project guidelines, objectives, work breakdown, and timeline for the year. Update the Centerâs Business Plan Competition web site, develop new content as needed, update sponsor logos, and key dates of the event.
- With director, develop eligibility policies for student teams and judging criteria for each stage of the event.
- Oversee logistics for the event, including orientation, room reservations, UW and hotel contracts, catering,
- Identify keynote speaker and coordinate his/her travel and event logistics.
- Work with other CIE staff to ensure smooth transition to dinner program, including guest lists, powerpoint presentations, etc, and oversee the production of promotional materials, event invitations and programs, and event visuals.
- Train student assistants and student volunteers for event duties.
- With faculty instructor, create Winter Quarter speaker series to take student participants through the business planning process in preparation for the competition.
- Develop and lead information sessions to promote the Business Plan Competition to prospective and current students.
- Speak at other universities across the state to draw entrepreneurship faculty and students in the event.
- Create announcements, web pages, etc. that provide information (deadlines and deliverables) for students in the competition.
- Create and maintain on-line registration forms, listserv, and database of student participants.
- Manage cross-campus networking events to encourage multi-disciplinary team formation.
- Meet with student teams as needed to answer questions, provide advice, and coordinate with a mentor or coach.
- Communicate details of the event via social media to the larger entrepreneurial community.
- Survey teams after the event to solicit their response to the event, the networking with judges, and their needs going forward.
- Track student involvement and teamsâ start-up progress after the competition.
- With the center director, identify prospective sponsors, renew current sponsors, and manage the "Friends of the BPC" donors.
- Create âbenefits of sponsorshipâ documents and other fund-raising materials.
- Ensure sponsor logos are up to date, create post-event thank-you notes, and coordinate donor engagement at the dinner.
- Create a plan for communication with past participants of the event, develop emails asking for donations, and engage alumni in the competition as judges as appropriate.
- Develop and maintain 2,000+ judge database, updating personal information and history with the center.
- Identify and meet with potential judges and determine best entry point into the competition.
- Contact and confirm judges for each round of the event, maintain communication and provide instructions for judges prior to the event, and create post-event thank-yous.
- Process, with budget manager, payments to the student teams that have won awards. Maintain excellent and detailed project records. Keep yearly event binder as well as samples of business plans, etc.
- Evaluate and implement program improvements.
- Report to the director and CIE advisory board on annual competition numbers.
- Track student involvement in post-competition activities, including meetings with CIEâs entrepreneur-in-residence, the Foster Accelerator, and presentations at Seattle angel forums, etc.
- Promote the Jones Milestones/Foster Accelerator to UW students, Environmental Innovation Challenge, and Business Plan Competition participants.
- Work with director to coordinate all logistics for the six-month program, including handling applications, setting up monthly meetings, tracking milestones, and ensuring committee participation.
- Lead responsibility for managing an annual three-day West Coast Research Symposium and Doctoral Consortium in Technology Entrepreneurship, with 75+ national and international attendees.
- Work with CIE director, faculty director, and nonresident steering committee members to develop symposium event timeline, international call for papers, guidelines for presenters, etc.
- Manage logistics for the event, including orientation, room reservations, hotel contracts, transportation, catering, equipment/supplies, gala dinner, networking activities.
- Create budget for symposium (approximately $50K), prepare travel paperwork for attendees, and manage to budget expectations. Work with budget manager to ensure prompt payment for doctoral attendees.
- Work with director on multi-year grant proposal to national foundation and write annual event reports to the foundation.
- Register faculty presenters, other faculty attendees, and doctoral consortium participants, and maintain communication with them pre- and post-event.
- Produce conference agenda, materials, and follow-up evaluations.
- Maintain excellent and detailed project records. Keep yearly event binder.
- Act as an event planning resource to other universities with similar conferences.
- Work with center director and faculty director to award Foster summer research grants in entrepreneurship.
- Track yearly research submissions, awards, and expenditures.
- Add UW entrepreneurship research papers to CIE web site.
- Update and maintain the MentorConnect web site, which allows students to find and contact experts who can help them with their businesses.
- Organize and manage Entrepreneur/VC/Legal Office Hours 2-4 times per quarter so students can receive regular feedback on their start-ups.
- Continually look for new entrepreneurs to add to MentorConnect.
- Serve as a liaison between the Center and the Alumni Network steering committee, which is comprised of CIE Advisory Board members and UW MBA and undergraduate alumni.
- Locate as many Business Plan Competition and entrepreneurship alumni as possible to engage them in CIE and upcoming alumni events.
- Promote Alumni Network events via CIEâs website and other social media outlets.
- Attend Alumni Network events as a representative of CIE.
- Assist director with new initiatives, strategic planning, external constituencies and stakeholders.
- Assist director with Center outreach activities to other departments, student groups, and events on campus.
- Other duties as assigned
BA in business, liberal arts, or communications.
Three or more years of experience in an entrepreneurship center, entrepreneurial setting, or fundraising office. Significant experience in event planning, budget coordination, and ability to lead student teams.
Proficiency with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Working knowledge of databases.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
Master's degree in business or liberal arts.
Progressively responsible experience managing a complex program or activity.
Strong supervisory skills, ability to develop databases, fundraising experience.
Proficiency with WordPress.
Knowledge of social media.
Condition of Employment:
